Kindergarten “Stuff”
Arrival and Dismissal Times: The children will enter and exit through their coat room door on the south side of the school.
AM – classes enter the classroom at 8:35 and the tardy bell rings at 8:40 class is dismissed at 11:40. On short days, class is dismissed at 10:35.
PM – classes enter the classroom at 12:20. School is dismissed at 3:20. On short days, the children come at 11:15 and school is dismissed at 1:15.
If a student is tardy, (more than five minutes late), they will need to go through the office to check in.
Drop off and Pick up:
The circle drive on the west side of the school is for busses only. Please do NOT use this area as a drop off or pick up area for children.
Please do not assume we are aware of playdates or have your child inform us playdates. We cannot release your child to anyone unless you have notified us.
Backpacks: Children should bring back packs to school every day unless instructed not to do so on special days such as field day or field trips. All notes and work from the school day will be in the purple school folder inside their backpack each day. Please check their backpack each day. If your child is bringing a note for the teacher, please make sure the student knows or it is pinned to the backpack. I do not check students’ backpacks.
Calendar: Be sure to check our classroom newsletter, school newsletter and school calendar for the latest information. The last of each school week is a short day. Kindergarten days will sometimes vary from other Crestview students. There may be days when all children come in the morning or all come in the afternoon (Halloween parade, field trips, etc.). You will be notified of these special days.
Be on time: We do many important things the first half-hour of school. It is important that everyone is here and ready to go. Also, when children come in late, it disrupts the rest of the class and causes embarrassment for the late child. Please get into the habit of arriving on time and picking up your child on time when the school day is over. These are important life skills and habits to instill in your child early on. If your child is more than a minute or two late, they will need to go to the front office to check in. I can’t spend the first ten minutes of class opening the back door for late students.
School Clothing: Please put your child’s name on his or her coat, sweaters, gloves, hats, boots, etc. This will help prevent any confusion when items are similar or left at school. All unclaimed items will be taken to the school lost and found located in the south hallway outside of the multipurpose room. Please remember to choose comfortable clothing for your student. We do lots of floor activities and body moving activities. Paint, clay and glue are also often a part of school. When the cold weather comes, please dress for it, as we still generally go outside for recess.
Recess: All children will go to recess everyday unless the teacher is instructed in a written note to keep him/her in or the air quality is at dangerous levels. Breathing fresh air is a good thing, even if it is cold air.
Homework: The only homework for Kindergarten is to read 20 minutes each night and record your minutes on the monthly reading chart. Once in a while, something extra may be sent home. Please get involved with your child when it does come home. Please send it back the next day as it is generally part of the next day lesson.
Reading at Home: Your child learned to talk because you talked to him/her. They learned to walk because of your example and encouragement, the same is true for learning to read. Let your child see you read, hear you read, and share with them the things you have read throughout the day. More information will be coming about our home reading program. Watch for details in the next couple of weeks!
Volunteers: Look for future information about volunteering in the classroom.
Birthday Celebrations: We will celebrate each child’s birthday during the school year. If your child has a summer birthday, we will choose a date during one of the school months to celebrate. Your child may bring a small treat to share with the class on his/her celebration day. This does not have to be food. A small toy, pencil, sticker, etc. are also great. All birthday treats go home at the end of the day in backpacks. Please, no cake or cupcakes! They become very messy!
Health: Please do not send your child to school when they are not feeling well. A child should be fever free, and/or on medications for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Please remember that teachers and all of the other students get the germs your sick child brings into the classroom.
